Of course, it would have to be a woman. Gwen Knapp has the job of keeping our icons human. Today, she tells the common tale of Icarus, the human who flew too close to the sun. The first time one of her stories stuck in my mind was from her covering the memorial service for Pat Tillman. That's where I first read that Pat's younger brother told off the people who were offering him cheap condolences. This comes up because ... well, I sent Gwen a congratulatory letter today on the Giambi story, and my newest blog friend, Bowietreks, is a very knowledgeable person when it comes to sports. I wanted to tell her who my favorite sports writer is. Sports writing is an art unto itself. It is probably the last of the "old culture" newspaper characters. It is a noble calling. Gwen Knapp is my favorite. If you like sports writing and don't know Gwen Knapp's writing, by all means check her out.
Thank you, but I don't know if I am all that knowledgeable. Is that spelled right? I am getting very sleepy and every word looks wrong. Yes, I like her work, too.

Roger Angell. When I first fell in love with baseball, his books and his articles in the New Yorker gave joy and insight. I must go back to some of them to refresh my enthusiasm. Example: in one article he urged umpires to tighten up the strike zone so it could "regain its girlish sillhouette."
