While surfing around the blogosphere this morning, I came across this remarkable essay on loving one's country. I do not know this woman. I do not know if I've read any previous posts by her. If you have a few moments, go read More Things We Throw Away by Hilzoy. You'll be glad you did. I believe Obsidian Wings is a group blog. There's some great writing over there. I'm linking to them, that's for damn sure. In the meanwhile, I am sending it to all of my friends and family who enable the Republicans to screw over our country so badly.
When I first started reading this it was with a bit of a cavilier attitude, the more I read, the less jovial I felt. By the end I was sitting here with tears rolling down my face. If just one of her assessments had been wrong, or even off a bit. But no, she's dead on right on all of it. I can't help but keep asking what the devil is wrong with the people of this country?
Don't tell me the past election was about the values of heartland America. I don't believe that for one second. It was about hypocracy, ignorance, and lack of caring enough to pay attention to what's going on.
Even knowing that I still don't believe that the majority of those who voted actually voted for Bush & Co. Ohio's corrupt state government is only now begining to come to the news forefront. There is little doubt in my mind that there was voter fraud in not only Ohio but Florida as well.
In the end I don't know which is worse. Knowing that there was most likely an illegal election and the people are doing nothing about it. Or knowing that the voters actually did vote for these people. Either way we appear to be damned.
